I have scratched my head hard over this story about importing Savannah Cats into Australia.
The couple who wanted to bring in these moggie monsters say they are about to sue the government because they claim to have written approval from Customs. You know what? I wouldn’t be surprised if they do. Australians really do have a bad track record when it comes to these matters.
The only difference between the Savannah Cats and previous acclimatisation disasters is that this one became public knowledge before it was too late.
As the importers-to-be, Queenslanders Glenn and Karen Parker, point out, Bengal Cats are here already.
So I guess that makes it right to bring in another super-predator? Why not grizzly bears? Lions? African hunting dogs?
We have a history of profound and utterly incomprehensible imports of plants and animals that have gone on to gleefully mow through our endemic wildlife.
Where are the animal liberationists on this issue? I’d put money on it, they would be the first to oppose any kind of culling once these twenty kilogram cats escape.
And the animal hospital reality television programs are probably already lining up to have the first segment about the vet who specialises in trimming their claws.
And who is supposed to defend the welfare of the marsupials who suddenly find they now have a feline Hannibal Lecter moving into their forest?
It is not true to say that desexing and big fences will prevent these animals becoming a problem.
As was pointed out in Jurassic Park – life always finds a way.
The Parkers want $2 million compensation and the really sad part of this story is that there are environmental agencies in this country whose entire budget is less than that. How many recovery plans could be written to save endangered species with a couple of million bucks…?
The Parkers probably will get their money because somebody probably did approve it. But I hope whoever did gets their butt kicked.

What harm could a few more cats do that has not already been done by feral horses, pigs, goats, camels, buffalo, donkeys, foxes, toads, rabbits, adnauseam?
